Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Dog Trainer and a Canine Behaviourist?
Some dog owners are unclear about who can best help them with their dog’s behaviour problem. Although many dog trainers offer advice on the causes of canine behaviour, there are many differences between the methods used by a dog trainer and a canine behaviourist. A dog trainer normally sets a goal of getting a dog to obey a command and then works towards that. A canine behaviourist looks back in time, exploring reasons for the behaviour and examining chains of events to find the cause of the behaviour. When dealing with problem behaviour it is often a case of trying to prevent a dog from doing something and it is necessary to find stimuli for the behaviour before modifications can be made. A one-to-one consultation to understand why your dog is behaving as it does allows me to develop a tailored behaviour modification programme.
